Jack Lopas claims Gold at Junior World Rowing Championships

19 September 2016

Christchurch rower Jack Lopas is on top of the world after the biggest achievement of his young rowing career.

Lopas, who is a Year 13 student at Christchurch Boys' High, teamed up with Whakatane's Lenny Jenkins to claim gold in the double sculls at the junior world championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Monday (NZ time).

Lopas, in the stroke seat, and Jenkins were favoured to do well and delivered an impressive effort to comfortably win the final. They powered home ahead of second placed Germany and Italy, who finished third.

Canterbury rowing chief John Wylie said it was another outstanding result from Lopas, who is among the best schoolboy rowers in the country. "Jack is a phenomenal young man. He's sculling well beyond his years. "He's done particularly well. He's on that high performance pathway now."

Lopas excelled at the Maadi Cup national regatta in April, winning gold in the under-18 coxed quadruple sculls, under-18 single sculls and under-18 double sculls, while finishing third in Boys' High's under-18 eight.

Rowing runs deep in his veins with grandfather, Geoff, racing for New Zealand at the 1978 world championships at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge.

Rams guard Quinn Clinton 'super excited' after confirming New Mexico scholarship

30 December 2016

Canterbury Rams guard Quinn Clinton didn't need much convincing to agree to a scholarship with the University of New Mexico once he flew over to the United States to check the team's facilities out.

Just as well, considering NCAA rules only allow prospect players to visit college campuses for a maximum of 48 hours. But that was more than enough time for 17-year-old Clinton, who last week confirmed his move to the division one school after a hasty post-Christmas visit.

Trap Shooting

Canterbury Schools Shooting Competition

19 June 2016

On Sunday 19 June at a drizzly Waihora, the CHBS Trap Shooting Team competed in the Canterbury Schools Shooting Competition. They shot incredibly well to place second in the competition behind STAC 1. They easily beat traditionally very strong schools with multiple teams entered, such as Lincoln, Darfield and Ellesmere.

The team score of 207 was taken from the shooting of Harry Denton, Ben Whitfield, Conway Morris, Hunter Bould and Oska Stewart-Williams, with Conway taking the top CBHS score of the day. Wilson Hewett narrowly missed out on the placings in his grade after a tense shoot off.

The boys represented the school with pride, and the camaraderie they showed during their “downtime” was, I’m sure, quite the envy of some other competitors and supporters. Yet, when required, they stepped up, focussed, performed and delivered, winning both on the field and off the field.

We are looking forward to the next Canterbury Schools Shoot on 3rd July at Ellesmere.
