Christchurch Boys' High School offers a wide variety of sporting options for our students. Many of our sports programmes have produced national and international athletes, competing at the highest levels in their sport.

Athletics and Cross Country

undefinedThe athletics team competes in the Canterbury, SI and NZ Secondary School Championships. A number of athletes compete for the school in inter club competitions on Saturdays. The squad also regularly travel to Australia to compete. We currently have several national champions. Our boys have represented NZ in the World Youth, Oceania and World Junior Championships.

Basketball

undefinedThe Christchurch Boys’ High School BHS Basketball team has always been competitive and we have won the National title twice before. Several Old Boys have gone on to play for the Canterbury Rams.

Cricket

undefinedChristchurch Boys’ High School is New Zealand’s cricket school. CBHS has recently won the Gillette Cup national titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and have won the competition eight times in its 25 year history - more than any other school. With the historic Main Building as a backdrop, the Straven Road Grounds have been the nursery of some of New Zealand’s great cricketers including the Hadlee family, Lee Germon and current BLACKCAPS Corey Anderson and Tom Latham. Over 30 Old Boys have represented New Zealand in cricket.

Cycling

undefinedCycling is very strong at Christchurch Boys’ High School and we regularly produce national age grade riders. The recent success of old boy of Anton Cooper has provided much inspiration for our current riders.

Duathlon

A number of boys participate in the Canterbury and
NZ Championships. They train with the cross-country
and cycling teams and also compete in those sports
for the school.

Fencing

Fencing can be taken as a full-year sport; it takes place on Wednesday afternoon, in conjunction with CGHS, in the Small Gym. There is a fee ($80 approx. depending on numbers involved) to cover gear and coaching. An internationally-experienced coach is employed to run a one-hour session each week. Periodic tournaments are held on Saturdays or Sundays.

Football

Christchurch Boys’ High School has a proud tradition of successful achievement at both local and national level in football. In recent years the 1st XI has been consistently one of the best secondary school sides in Christchurch.

Golf

Beginning golfers and those with high handicaps have coaching every week and play at Hagley. Low handicap golfers compete for positions in the school golf teams, which play in the local inter school competitions. The A team also competes in local and national interschool events. It is preferred that students have their own clubs, although we may be able to assist if required.

Hockey

undefinedHockey has been one of Christchurch Boys’ High Schools most successful sports with over 30 old boys having represented New Zealand - including 3 in 2014. We have won the Rankin Cup 18 times and placed in the top four 29 times.

Rowing

undefinedRowing has a keen and successful group of participants competing regularly. The rowers train on Kerrs Reach and have an association with the Canterbury Rowing Club and the NZ Rowing Association. Each year we compete in a variety of regattas culminating in the NZ school championships in March.

Rugby

With over 500 current players and having produced 46 All Blacks, Christchurch Boys' High School has a strong rugby history and community. The annual match with Christ’s College  is an iconic New Zealand rugby fixture that draws nation-wide interest. The club also holds an annual rugby pre-season rugby festival in April.

Squash

undefinedSquash is played in both summer and winter. CBHS has been very successful nationally over the last decade, winning three national titles and being placed runner up on a further three occasions.

Surfing

The inter school surf contest runs during the first and fourth term at New Brighton surf club on a Wednesday afternoon from 3-5pm. The purpose of the contest, other than to have fun and improve your surfing, is to give surfers experience at contest conditions and it becomes a core component in selecting a Canterbury surf team, that go onto have winter training squads and attend national surf champs.

Tennis

All boys who have had some experience playing tennis before are welcome to play for CBHS in the interschool competition on Wednesday afternoons. The most promising junior players and members of the Senior A team are eligible for subsidised coaching from the Te Kura Club professional coach. Tennis has been extremely strong at CBHS for many years with the A team having an excellent record in the local, regional and national championships.

Triathlon

The school has a small but strong team which competes in the Canterbury, SI and NZ Secondary Schools Championships. The school has a The school team has a proud history of producing a number of New Zealand, South Island and Canterbury Champions. The team trains Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with the athletics team.

Waterpolo

We have up to three water polo teams that compete in junior and senior grades in an inter school competition. The team has performed very well for a number of years. The senior team has won the Christchurch and South Island secondary schools championships on a number of occasions in recent years and been well placed in the New Zealand championships. A number of boys are selected for representative teams. NB Opportunities may be limited in 2016 because of the loss of facilities as a result of the earthquakes and Jellie Park Pool repairs.

Volleyball

This summer sport is continuing to grow in reputation due to the success of all the teams at the different levels of competition. We have a great group of students who are interested in the sport and a coaching team that is enthusiastic about its development within the school, resulting in some great results at the regional and national competitions. Teams at the senior and junior level regularly participate in a Monday after-school competition against other local schools during Terms 1 and 4. We also send junior and senior teams to the Canterbury, South Island and National tournaments.

Yachting

We have a small, keen and successful group of competition sailors. We hire 420s for competitions. Members are expected to have competition experience. Sailing takes place each Wednesday afternoon at Lyttelton and sometimes on Saturdays. The team sails in a number of interschool events. Our team has represented Canterbury for the last nine years at the national secondary schools team championships. A cost is fixed at the start of each year to offset travel and maintenance costs, hire of rescue boats, etc. and $150 to go towards boat hire.
