The Press this morning 11/10/18 identifies buildings at Christchurch Boys' High School as amongst 588 buildings listed by the City Council as earthquake prone. The article goes on to state that the Council estimates that there may be 10 000 Christchurch Buildings that are potentially earthquake prone.
J Block (the Old Woodwork Building) is earthquake prone and is closed.
Because student safety is paramount for the Board of Trustees an engineering assessment was made of the Main Block at the begining of this year. Temporary repairs had been undertaken on the Main Block immediatley after the earthquakes. The engineering report of 16 February 2018 states that the Main Block is between 50 and 60 percent of the Building Code with the exception of the Gables that are between 40 and 50 percent. The Main Block is therefore safe to occupy.
The design of permanent repairs to the Main Block Gables is underway and will be incorporated in the Ministry of Education's upgrade and modernisation of the Main Block.
