CBHS provides classes for students learning English as an additional language.
When students first arrive, their English is assessed against the English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP). Students are placed in ordinary English and/or one of the following English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The Year 12 classes include students from Year 11, 12 and 13.
9 & 10ESL - English for Speakers of Other Languages (all Stages ELLP) – 3 hours per week
12ESL - English for Speakers of Other Languages (Stage 2 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
12EAP - English for Academic Purposes (Stage 3 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
13EAP - English for Academic Purposes (Stage 4 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
The aim of the classes is to support students to have the language to manage learning within the New Zealand Curriculum. The vision is for students to develop as confident, connected, actively involved, life-long learners. Students learn collaboratively with a focus on school language through general topics e.g. ‘Fusion food’, ‘Stories of resilience’ or ‘The global banana trade’.
Students in the Year 12 classes aim for the New Zealand National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Levels 1 and 2. The assessment focus is on English Language standards and Level 1 Literacy standards for those that need them. In the Year 13 class, students are aiming for NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance Literacy.
