Special Language Programmes
CBHS provides classes for students learning English as an additional language
When students first arrive, their English is assessed against the Ministry of Education English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP). The ELLP stages are Foundation, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4. Students are then placed in English Language classes.
English Language classes
- Year 9 & 10
9 & 10ESL – English for Speakers of Other Languages (Foundation to Stage 3 ELLP) – 3 hours per week & mainstream English - Year 11, 12 & 13
Some students are in two classes.
Year 12 classes include students from Years 11, 12 and 13 - 12ESL – English for Speakers of Other Languages (Stage 2 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
12EAP – English for Academic Purposes (Stage 3 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
13EAP – English for Academic Purposes (Stage 4 ELLP) – 4 hours per week
The aim of the classes is to support students to have the language to manage learning within the Ministry of Education New Zealand Curriculum. The vision is for students to develop as confident, connected, actively involved, life-long learners.
Long-term students in the Year 12 classes aim for the New Zealand National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Levels 1 and 2. The assessment focus is on English Language standards and Level 1 Literacy standards for those that need them. In the Year 13 class, students are aiming for NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance Literacy. Some senior students also have the opportunity to achieve the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) instead of NCEA.
